First principles: Why not to bomb Syria in 109 words

syria-mapIt can be confusing to brush up on foreign policy and sort truth from lies in a regarding a pending conflict.


It’s useful to go back to first principles: dropping bombs on people is wrong and very rarely brings peace or justice; empires’ motivations and results are never as benevolent as they are presented; “tough choices” are the consequences of bad decisions.


If the United States truly wanted to devote several billion dollars and our collective attention to reducing suffering and oppression in the coming weeks there are hundreds of things we could do that would be more effective than raining bombs on Syria, in that region or elsewhere.
